I had this idea noodling around in my head lately about doing some paintings with the subject half on and half off the canvas. Then Amy from the Wading In class published this photo and I took it as a sign.
This is where we’re at so far. I put it in as my Week 4 contribution in Get Your Paint On, partly because for me it’s about the composition and that’s week 4’s class topic, and also because I am SO STUCK!
This is what I know: I want it to be loose, relaxed, soft and textured.
This is what I don’t know: what to do with it now.
It doesn’t feel finished but I’m buggered if I know what’s next, and have got The Major Fear because I kind of like it as it is and don’t want to ruin it.
I have asked for advice and ‘pushing feedback’ in the Flickr group, and there have already been some kind words AND constructive suggestions. One of which is to extend the wing outwards across the canvas, which is an idea I’m going to play with. And also using text; I could definitely find something suitable to go in that space on the left, maybe in a pale colour so it’s not too intrusive.
Hmm.
I saw some text on it as soon as I looked, I love to see your profile picture in the same way, painted, with text. Your self protriats have been so go , it would be good now to paint some with some text. oh hang on a miunte maybe I need to go away and do some of that!
Hi Tara,
One piece of advice my Art teacher says is 'Don't be too precious with your work'. The less precious your are, the more chances you take and the more you grow/learn. I hope this makes sense to you.
I have found the more I play, enjoy and don't worry about the end result, the better it turns out (usually). What's the worst that can happen? You have to start again. If you did it once, I'm sure you can do it again.
I hope my novel helps.

gold writing is what I can see!

lovely painting..I am thinking very faint writing to the left hand side perhaps in a slightly darker shade of blue
Maybe some silver or gold leafing on the wings and halo to draw focus away from the side…..perhaps even rays of light projecting from her…
maybe she is sitting on a cloud or among the stars?
This is lovely and using text is a good option but I like the empty space…not seeing the angel's face allowed my eyes to wander to the space and wonder about her and what she could be thinking.
I like it as it is.

Hilarious! Somehow I missed the title of this post the first time I saw it (I've been paging back through your archives, after months of way too little reading of other people's blogs). You're so funny. And I'm still so honored you were inspired by the photo! xoxo
