Kate Gold's Create a Collection story

When you take a course of any kind, you never know what impact it might have long after that course is over.

Today’s feature is a beautiful example of one artist’s journey from building a body of work, to shows, sales, and a significant opportunity.

Meet Kate Gold, who joined the inaugural round of my course, Create a Collection.

She spent the duration of the course working on a series of mixed media collages using her own printed collage papers about Dartmoor, a landscape she knows and loves.

What’s the name of the collection?

Dartmoor Dreaming

What did you discover in creating this collection?

I discovered how useful it was to be given such practical insights and advice about pricing, galleries and use of social media.

What challenged you and how did you overcome it?

The only real challenge for me was having to pack up my art work and all my materials to take with me whilst working away from home.

What surprised you about making this collection?

What surprised me was that I stuck with it beyond the timespan of the ‘supported’ part of the course.

I completed a collection of 10 art pieces and have started two other collections.

What’s been happening since you completed the course?

Such a lot has happened since I completed the course!

I participated in an exhibition in Exeter with a group called CROW (Creative Older Women) where I sold a couple of originals and some prints and cards.

I am currently participating in Devon Open Studios and have turned my hallway into a little gallery.

Despite being a bit off the beaten track, I have made sales of original art works and cards.

It’s been lovely to invite people into my creative space and share in some interesting conversations.

I recently applied for a place on the Professional Landscape Programme with Newlyn School of Art, and I learned a few days ago that I have been offered a place (with a generous bursary too) and I am really excited to see where this year long course (6 weekends) will lead me.

I can honestly say that I wouldn’t be in this position if I hadn’t done Tara’s ‘Create a Collection’ course. It gave me the motivation to focus and the structure to support me.

Kate’s skills, efforts, and persistence led to opportunities and wins; the Create a Collection course was simply the springboard she needed to get her going.
