Catherine Morris was one of the first students to take my course, Create a Collection.
She has very kindly given me permission to share both her experience of the course, and what she created.
I’m so delighted to present her gorgeous collection here!
And I hope it gives you a sense of what’s possible when you switch to working this way.
So without further ado, here’s Catherine and her collection.
What’s the name of the collection?
“The Land I Walk”

What did you discover in creating this collection?
The advantages of just sticking with a theme/limited palette/way of working:
I found that my work developed with each piece I completed and helped me to clarify what elements were really important to me and what I want and don’t want in my work.
To the extent that as I was finishing some of the later pieces I looked back at my earlier ones and realised that I needed to go back and work over them to improve them!

What challenged you and how did you overcome it?
Not getting diverted!
I am a naturally curious butterfly, always being drawn away by a more interesting ‘flower’ . But the fact that I had committed to this series meant that I stuck with it.

What surprised you about making this collection?
It was very enjoyable and more satisfying
a) because I ended up with a cohesive body of work that I was pleased with and
b) because I wasn’t slogging away at the same old painting every day.
If one piece wasn’t working I put it to one side while I worked on some of the others and more often than not, by the time I came back to it a solution emerged quickly because of the work I had done on the others.

Would you like to create a collection of your own?
If you’ve never worked this way before, it can feel a bit daunting or opaque, but it can be absolutely game changing for your practice.
From stuck, frustrated, and not sure how to tell when a piece is finished, then stalling out for weeks or months, to being able to stay in flow, and create a body of work that shines with your unique voice.
Create a Collection is open twice a year currently.
