Artist Inspired II is back!
To celebrate, I decided to release part of a lesson from it for you to enjoy absolutely free.
Perhaps it will inspire you to have a go at this approach, perhaps you’ll decide you want to join us, or maybe it’ll help you decide against it!
Whatever your experience, may it spark something for you, preferably in the direction of the studio. 😉
Marlene Dumas: Human Essence
Materials used:
- Seawhite all media cartridge paper  {start with cheap paper while you get used to the process. I used A3 size – about 11 x 17 in}
- Sumi ink and Winsor and Newton India Ink
- Three brushes of different sizes
- Thin stick {a pen nib would also work well}
- Photos of faces {from magazines, personal photographs, selfies etc}
- Jar of water
- Rag or paper towel
Key words to keep in mind for this lesson:
- essence
- speed
- values
- suggestive
Your optional challenge or focus for this lesson:
Use a selfie and make several drawings from it, trying as many approaches as you can think of.

To see the lesson in full, as well as a whole range of lessons exploring the work of several other female artists as a means of developing your own unique voice as an artist, click here or the image on the left.
This course is self study, so you can sign up at a time that suits you, and take it at your own pace. It’s also available inside the Happy Artist Studio Membership, alongside a host of other courses and resources – find out more about that here!
That was so much fun Tara. I love to do this too – feels very freeing and playful.
Glad you enjoyed it Jane!
A little time ago I read a post you made about colour in paintings and how to check the balance. I think you said you used Pictalicious? I’ve tried to find again but must have been on one of a hundred pins from Pinterest and is in the ether????.
Could you let me know what app it was as no joy in App Store.
Thank you for your wonderful posts and emails which are both inspiring and supportive. Just missed registration for Touchstone due to will I won’t I can I can’t phase. That’ll teach me! Next time round.
No. Have you met Glyn Mackey in Penzance?
Hi Suzanne – I’m thinking you mean Pictaculous, which is here: http://www.pictaculous.com/ I don’t know if it’s an app – I used it on the laptop.
Would love to have you on Touchstone next time!
Haven’t met Glyn Macey but I have read one of his books. 🙂
“Also, Frida has become a man.” Love it!
