move

This puppy has been finished for a week or two, only I didn’t know it was finished til the other night. I just suddenly ‘realised’. Which is cool because I couldn’t work out what more it needed.

These progress shots don’t seem to start very early on, but it gives some idea of how it came together.

What’s also cool is it seems to be one of a building theme, which incorporates colour and figures in a slightly abstract way. I think it’s being heavily influenced by Nia actually; I’m still averaging three classes a week and it seems to impact my whole life. As my teacher says, ‘the wind blows everywhere.’ I think about dancing all the time!

It is hard to describe that internal ‘click’ I feel when I’ve added colour and lines intuitively for a while and then I SEE it, the image the painting wants to be. It’s kind of a buzz actually.

The colours in this one make my heart beat faster! I’m so happy with the figure, which just emerged on her own; I couldn’t have created that sense of a movement captured if I had painstakingly tried. It makes the paintings feel like they’re out of my control, which is both a relief and a bit frustrating at times.

Anyway, I’ve called this one ‘Move’ and it’ll be available in my shop shortly.

PS. Thank you so much for all the lovely supportive comments about the work I produced during my pen and ink class. It was really encouraging and is helping me keep the creative momentum going! xx

finding colour

Now that it gets dark at 4pm and the light is so shortlived and often not what I would really call ‘light’ anyway, I will quite frankly take all the colour I can get. So I was very pleased to come across the following video via Vivienne, which is both an explosion of colour and a very inspiring four minutes from a lady who makes 90 years old seem like a very exciting proposition.

May we all embrace life in this way when the time comes to ‘stop buying green bananas’.

Oh, and also, wow:

Love It: Clara Fialho

I am drowning deliciously in colour.

Clara Fialho‘s work sings to me, a loud and happy song. So much colour and energy and vibrance! I can look and look at her paintings and see all kinds of tiny wonders which together make me feel like leaping round the room.

It’s a colour EXPLOSION! True, sometimes you want quiet, and white spaces, and places to rest your eyes. But sometimes, sometimes you want work like this that gets right up in your face and sings very loudly.

{this one is my fave. this will no doubt surprise you}

I haven’t found out much about Clara beyond her “ever self-editing” artist statement, which gives some insight into her feelings and thoughts about her work:

“My work is intended to take the viewer away from the world of thought. Most of the time it is process oriented, sometimes containing elements from dreams. It reveals universal forms, which are believed to be innately present in every human being….Most importantly, it should leave them with something positive.

In my humble fellow-artist opinion: mission accomplished. :)

painting by chakras

I recently mentioned that I had noticed myself using colours I don’t normally use, and it got me thinking about chakras and how each one is associated with a colour and various emotional, mental, physical and spiritual aspects.

You can wear specific colours, or carry certain crystals or decorate your home to promote more of what you wish for in your life, whether it’s abundance or confidence or somewhere to rest.

So couldn’t you create paintings using specific colours for specific things too? For me there has been a lot of orange and blue lately (well, there’s always blue!). Orange corresponds to the sacral chakra, centre for creativity (among other things); blue relates to the throat chakra, seat of communication and speaking your truth. (And here’s me trying to work out how to tell my truth in my paintings!)

{image via wikipedia}

Balancing the chakras means balancing your whole self and bringing it all into alignment. If everything is in balance, there is no illness, no exhaustion or stress, and things that would normally cause ‘negative’ responses in you can be dealt with quickly and easily as the energy flows through you unresisted and unblocked.

Here’s a little rundown of the chakras (Sanskrit for ‘wheel’) and what colours and areas they relate to (from various sources, see bottom):

Crown Chakra (violet/white): upper brain, integration with God, connection with spirit, Universal Force, Thought, pure consciousness

Third Eye Chakra (indigo): Lower brain and nervous system, ears, nose, personality, psychic ability, self-reflection, intuition

Throat Chakra (royal blue): Communication, self expression, lungs, vocal cords, metabolism, judgement, growth through expression

Heart Chakra (green/pink): heart, blood, circulatory system, romance, relationships, unconditional love for self and others, ability to give and receive love, compassion

Solar Plexus Chakra (yellow): pancreas, liver, stomach, digestion, nervous sytem, emotional sensitivities, personal power, self esteem

Sacral Chakra (orange): sexual/reproductive organs, creativity, reproduction, fertility, basic emotional needs, addictions, pleasure, life force energy

Root Chakra (red): fear, adrenal gland, basic necessities, understanding of the physical dimension, grounding, instinct, security, survival, family

What colours do you use often? Are there any you always go back to? Or do you sometimes find yourself gravitating to colours you never normally go for? Maybe the colours you choose are showing you where you need extra support and attention. And by the same token you could create paintings that energise a space that needs more of something; maybe if you need to spice up your love life you could do a red painting for the bedroom! ;)

I’m always interested in ways to combine art and healing; I love the idea of making paintings that heal just by having them in the room.

crayons!

Wyanne’s Paint Free class started on Wednesday. This class is about discovering your own true style of creativity. Lesson One: Colouring In. With crayons. :) It’s testament to how crap I’ve been feeling the last week that I couldn’t even lift a crayon to do some colouring in until today. But I’m slowly reemerging from my chrysalis state.

colour and wise words from a little green dude

Remember recently I took part in Louise Gale’s Creative Colour Challenge? She featured my paintings – twice! – in her wrap up blog post. (Top right in both these images.)So that’s nice. I’ve done nothing creative for a couple of days because I feel like crap – throat like sandpaper, glands up, no energy whatsoever. I almost never get sick. I think it might be a message to stop Trying So Hard. After all, as Yoda said, ‘Do or do not. There is no try.’ I’ve been doing so much lately regarding healing/Reiki/energy work.

So it’s rather a case of ‘do not’ round here right now.

colour challenge: blooming complementary

Louise Gale organises colour challenges twice a year and this month I decided to take part. It’s always good to do things creatively that you wouldn’t normally do; it pushes you outside your comfort zone. And this definitely pushed me right out of mine! The theme was ‘Bloom’, and the challenge was to use complementary colours (which if you aren’t sure are the ones opposite each other on the colour wheel). You may have noticed I don’t paint flowers that often, and nor do I tend to use complementary colours in any obvious way in my paintings. So once I sat down I realised I didn’t even know where, or how, to start! So I just started.I found that working on paper is a whole different kettle of fish from working on canvas. It’s freeing. I also get a really quite tragic kick out of using masking tape to make a clean white border. The other joy of working on paper is you can scan it instead of photographing it, which makes editing a lot easier.
I did a third (well I do like a triptych), in yellow and purple, but it’s so bad I can’t show you. I’ll use it for cutting up and making backgrounds.

My swap partner is Judit at Pilgrim of the Moon. She has a lovely Etsy shop, and look what she did for me! So simple and pretty; it has some gorgeous layers and stitching, and will look perfect framed and hanging with my new yellow wallpaper (coming soon…).

***********

I must just say how unbelievably touched and overwhelmed I’ve been by all the lovely comments about my work, wishes for my birthday (and laptop!) and entries from lovely new-to-me people since I wrote about the giveaway. I’m not usually one for over the top gushing but I have been really surprised and pleased at the response.

I am constantly blown away by the kindness and generosity of creative people in the blogging world, and I am truly grateful to ALL of you; I’ve been trying to stop by everyone’s blog to thank them personally, so if I haven’t got to you yet, I’m on my way!

The laptop is back in my grubby little paws and we are working very hard together on catching up (really quite frightening how much can happen Out There in three days!). Big love to everyone, and good luck! :)

Hmm.

Lesson two in our portrait class is about introducing colour, in this case with Prismacolor pencils and acrylics on top of the initial graphite. I can’t do it! Waahh! And my girl looks superior and haughty – she’s meant to be pretty! Need to go back to the drawing board (so to speak) with measurements.
Of course she’s not finished, but you would not believe how long I spent adding layer upon layer of about 7 different colours to build up the shadows. Very testing. Makes me realise how lazy I’ve become. Still, it’s all good practice! Looking forward to producing something I actually like.

Layer Love Lesson 5: Colour Colour!

Turns out I’m not that confident with taking something as my colour inspiration.Or maybe I just didn’t pick a very good colour scheme to work from. I also didn’t have necessarily the right colour paints. Anyway, never mind. I got some good texture in.
And a bunch of new paints arrived today! Woop! No more excuses.
